Local Studies Library Exhibitions

Every year the Local Studies Library compiles an exhibition on various aspects of Cork County history, to highlight the collections and resources available in the Local Studies library. These collections are exhibited across the county in library branches, thereby providing an important link between our library and local communities. The subject matter in these collections is quite varied. It includes commemorative exhibitions of well-known Cork people such as Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, Seán Ó Riordáin and Jack Lynch. Other topics covered include: the history of the Ford Company in Cork, the Cork Bandon and South Coast Railway and the history of Youghal’s bridges.

Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway

This exhibition will give an overview of the history of this West Cork line, from its beginnings in the 1840’s to its closure in the 1960’s. The starting point for the exhibition was the work of the late Colm Creedon, noted railway enthusiast, whose notebooks and published books provided the foundation for the presentation. Also included are photographs of the line from the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s. Incorporating all the main towns in West Cork, the line connected the southwest of the county with Cork city and in turn the rest of the country. As well as examining the past, the exhibition will also look forward, as possible future plans for the redevelopment of the old railway lines is outlined.
