The Sinking of the Lusitania

The torpedoing of the Lusitania by the German U-Boat U-20 contributed indirectly to the entry of the United States into the First World War. There was global condemnation against the sinking, particularly in the United States as 128 of the victims were American citizens.

Public opinion turned sharply against Germany’s conduct in the war as the US strongly objected to Germany’s use of unrestricted submarine warfare. The British government also used many posters featuring the sinking of the Lusitania to encourage more men to enlist as soldiers in the war effort.
