Celebrating National Heritage Week in the Local Studies Library

The War of Independence and Civil War Exhibition

This exhibition of Cork’s unique role in the history of the War of Independence and Civil War was compiled by staff from the Local Studies Library and the Heritage Office of Cork County Council, and was supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. The 24-panel exhibition details many noteworthy events from these momentous years in Irish history.  It also includes descriptions of key figures such as Tom Barry, Liam Lynch, Michael Collins and the role of women and Cumann na mBan, as well as reflections on the civilian experience.

The exhibition will be on display during Heritage Week (15th -19th August from 9am-5.pm) in the LHQ Gallery, County Library Building, Carrigrohane Road, Cork, T12 K335. Admission is free and no prior booking is necessary.

Podcast on the Irish Tourist Association Files

In the 1940s files were compiled by the Irish Tourist Association, a forerunner of Fáilte Ireland , with a view to developing the tourist potential of various localities. The files for Cork are now held by Cork County Library and this podcast looks at a selection of them in a regional spread. The Local Studies Library has undertaken a digitisation process of these files with funding from The Heritage Council, in order to safeguard the original material as well as ensuring greater access through the provision of digital copies.

The files are rich on the history, natural features and other aspects of the many towns and villages of County Cork.  The modern tourist could find some golden nuggets in the files which are neither included in the glossy brochures nor mentioned by the walking tour guide.
